Recycling with Nespresso
Make a change. Recycle a capsule.
Nespresso Australia is committed to ensuring we are part of a sustainable coffee economy. The good news is our capsules are made of aluminium, which is infinitely recyclable. To make it as easy as possible for all our customers to return their used capsules, we have created a nationwide recycling program.
Nespresso Business Recycling
We offer a free of charge collection service to our customers for their used Nespresso aluminium capsules. Upon request, we will supply a Bulk Recycling Kit which includes 3 large recycling boxes, each holding up to 1,500 used Nespresso aluminium Professional and in-home capsules.

The Recycling Process
Every capsule has future potential
Nespresso uses aluminium for its capsules as it is the best material available today to protect the freshness, taste and quality of the Nespresso coffee blends. Aluminium is also infinitely recyclable. This means that there is potential for a second life within every capsule. So when you are finished enjoying your Nespresso Coffee, please return your Nespresso aluminium capsules to us. We will see to it that it goes on to achieve its potential through recycling.
The Separation Process
We have partnered with a local recycling centre to create a tailored recycling system to separate the aluminium and coffee in the used Nespresso capsules. Each material then goes on to live its second life.
Second Life
From coffee to compost
The recovered coffee grounds are sent to a local composting facility. There they are combined with dirt and organic matter, creating rich and nutritious compost, later used in landscaping.
From aluminium to anything
Once separated from the coffee grounds, the aluminium is compacted. It is then sent for smelting and refining. The refined metal can then be used in a variety of different products. Nespresso has partnered with Swedish lifestyle brand, Vélosophy, to design and develop a limited-edition bike made from recycled Nespresso capsules from our Swiss recycling program. This collaboration aims to inspire around the potential of a circular economy, which is made possible when your business recycles its used aluminium capsules.

Nespresso Australian Goals
Nespresso Australia is committed to ensuring we are part of a sustainable coffee economy. However, we face a challenge in that our products cannot be recycled through Australia’s domestic waste systems. That is why, since 2010, we have implemented a recycling program specifically for all our customers, and have worked with a local specialised recycling facility to put in place a dedicated system to recycle our used aluminium capsules.
Our commitment is to continually improve our recycling program to help ensure that as many used Nespresso capsules (both Professional and in-home) are recycled as possible.
