NESPRESSO, BALARINJI & INDI KINDI
An innovative art partnership between Nespresso and leading Australian design studio Balarinji has produced colourful capsule art walls in Nespresso boutiques nationwide.
Established in 1983, Indigenous-owned Balarinji is best known for Aboriginal art covering Qantas 747 and 737 aircraft. Balarinji founders John and Ros Moriarty were inducted into the Design Institute of Australia’s Hall of Fame in 2014, recognising their unparalleled life’s work in building bridges of understanding and best practice participation between Indigenous communities, business and the broader community.
Balarinji works of art are held in the collections of the National Museum of Australia and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, and the Centre for Contemporary Graphic Design, Fukuoka, Japan.
In 2012 Balarinji created The Nangala Project, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to creating an environment for sustainable change to benefit children and youth in remote Indigenous communities. Nespresso is the founding sponsor of Nangala’s Indi Kindi initiative, an early literacy program assisting families to improve the global learning readiness of very young bush children entering pre-school and school. Using images from Balarinji’s archive, and donor support from partners like Nespresso, Indi Kindi delivers a daily pre-education program in town camps, a “Library Without Walls” on wheels, swap-book boxes in key community locations, and access to better nutrition and wellbeing for parents and children.
With Nespresso’s help, Indi Kindi is being delivered in the Borroloola and Robinson River, NT. It is being trialled, measured, sustained locally, and scaled up for expansion across remote Australia.
