HUMANITARIAN
RICE PROJECT
Year after year, the coffee from your recycled
capsules has been going on a journey. A charity-friendly
journey that passes through the rice paddies of the
Ebro Delta and ends at the Spanish Foodbank Federation.
THE JOURNEY, STEP-BY-STEP
1. THE RECYCLING
The journey begins with you, when you recycle your capsules at a Nespresso collection point. There are around 1,900 throughout Spain. Much more than it seems, right?
2. SEPARATION
This is a key point in the process. We separate the coffee from the aluminium at the Tradebe composting plant, so that each one can start its journey.
3. PLANTING
Where does the coffee end up? The rice paddies of the Ebro Delta. There, the Montsià Rice Growers’ Association is responsible for sowing and flooding the paddy fields and fertilising 33 hectares with the remaining grounds.
4. HARVESTING
During the summer, the cultivated rice ears grow and are dried. Once they acquire their distinctive golden colour, the Montsià rice growers harvest the entire crop.
5. DONATION
The journey draws to a close in the best way possible. The entirety of the harvested rice is given to the 55 Spanish food banks, reaching over a million people per year.
