AAA Sustainable Quality™Program takes a dynamic, constantly-evolving approach
AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, launched in 2003 in collaboration with NGO Rainforest Alliance, was a direct response to long-term systemic risks within the high quality coffee supply chain.
Our innovative collaboration integrated the commitment of Nespresso to quality coffee sourcing, Nestlé’s sustainable agriculture expertise and Rainforest Alliance’s experience in sustainability standards and farm-level implementation.
Over 11 years, the program has grown from around 300 farmers at launch, to some 63,000 farmers across 11 countries adopting AAA Sustainable Quality™ practices.
AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program takes a dynamic, constantly-evolving approach that integrates emerging thinking on quality, productivity and sustainability, always taking into account social, environmental and economic parameters.
The impacts are clear. CRECE data in Colombia, for example, shows a significant positive impact for AAA Sustainable Quality™ farmers, versus similar farms not in the program. According to CRECE’s independent assessments, AAA Sustainable Quality™ farms outperformed a control group of non-member farms in three areas.
• 41% higher economic output
• 52% higher environmental values
• 23% higher social impact
• More than 63,000 farmers involved in 11 countries
• 290,000 hectares of land under management
• Training and technical assistance through a network of 300 agronomists
• 296 sustainability indicators
• Over 80% of coffee comes from AAA Program (end of 2014)
• 30% of AAA coffee and 14% of AAA farms are now Rainforest Alliance Certified.
• 12 years of our AAA Program.
• Premiums of 30%-40% above market prices and 10%-15% above coffees of similar quality
In 2013 in Australia, we announced a partnership with highly awarded international recycling company TerraCycle. In addition to recycling points at all Nespresso Boutiques nationally, this partnership provides another way for Club Members to recycle their used capsules.
