THE NEVER-ENDING CAPSULE

RECYCLING INNOVATION
FOR CAPSULE END-OF-LIFE

Today we are able to retrieve 80 % of all capsules sold

As Nespresso capsules - and portioned coffee generally - are not classified as packaging by EU directives, national governments are not required to implement systems to recycle and reuse the material.

However, in 1991 we created the first unique capsule recycling program in Switzerland. Since then we have collaborated with global partners to find market-appropriate solutions, focusing on consumer convenience, environmental efficiency and improving existing local infrastructure.

The First unique capsule recycling program

In 2009 we were instrumental in creating CELAA, a French group committed to improving small aluminium and steel pack recycling. Within France we also invested in pilots with local recycling agency EcoEmballage, using Eddy Current equipment to retrieve small aluminium packaging.

Today we are able to retrieve 80% of all capsules sold. As part of our 2020 commitments, we are also starting to convert end-of-life capsules into new capsule material.
