Climate Commitment and Caring for Communities

We believe that a cup of Nespresso coffee can deliver an extraordinary experience while creating greater value for society and the environment

Nespresso is aiming to decrease Green House Gas emissions. We will achieve this by scaling and accelerating our efforts across the full scope of GHG emissions from farm to end-of-life, preventing GHG emissions at the source of our activities, and removing carbon from the atmosphere to ultimately curb the evolution of our global footprint. Read on below to learn more about the ways in which we work to reduce our climate impact.

Partnering with Rainforest Alliance

Behind every cup of coffee is the farm it was grown on and, behind that, the people nurturing the land. These incredible farmers are the heart of the unforgettable taste of Nespresso coffee.

Over the last 20 years, we’ve partnered with the Rainforest Alliance to enrol over 150,000 farmers into the AAA Program: a unique approach to coffee sourcing designed to ensure the long-term supply of precious coffees.

Nespresso AAA Sustainability Quality Program

We at Nespresso also understand that high-quality coffee and the sustainability of farming communities are interconnected. And only by building trust, loyalty and long-standing relationships with coffee producers can we hope to make a positive difference. That is why in 2003 we partnered with the Rainforest alliance to establish the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program.

Farmer Future

We have created the Farmer Future Program together with Fairtrade in 2014 with the aim of further supporting coffee farmers in building sustainable livelihoods and thriving communities. The Program’s first initiative was the creation of a retirement savings scheme for farmers in Colombia, as access to retirement savings plans is extremely limited. The scheme helps farmers set aside money and invest for their future so that they do not have to work into old age. This means that older farmers can pass on their farms to the younger generation, helping to secure the future financial and environmental sustainability of coffee farming. An equivalent scheme now exists in Aceh, Indonesia.

Regenerative Farming

We are committed to fostering more sustainable agricultural practices and enabling a shift towards regenerative agriculture. Through the AAA program, we teach coffee producers sustainable farming practices and tackling issues such as pollution, waste and the excessive use of agro-chemicals. We have also been working with coffee farmers to reintroduce trees in and around coffee farms to strengthen the resilience of communities to climate change. Agroforestry, the practice in which trees are grown in and around crops and pastureland, promotes biodiversity and natural healthy ecosystems, further improves soil quality, regulates temperatures and protects against soil erosion.
