Latte Macchiato with Nespresso:
The perfect indulgence in an instant.

The Latte Macchiato – a three-layer masterpiece of milk, espresso, and milk foam. With Nespresso, preparation is effortless and consistently perfect. Discover how to create your perfect Latte Macchiato.

What is a Latte Macchiato?

The origin of the Latte Macchiato lies in Italy as a children's drink. When the family sat together at the kitchen table and the little ones wanted to have coffee too, the hot milk was mixed with a shot of espresso—just enough to create a "spot" in the milk.

The coffee Latte Macchiato (spotted milk) is a popular coffee specialty with three characteristic layers: hot milk, espresso, and milk foam. The typical Latte Macchiato amount consists of about 200 ml of milk, 40 ml of espresso, and a generous portion of milk foam.

"To stir or not – that remains up to your taste. Unstirred, the layers are displayed at their best; stirred, the flavors blend perfectly."

Latte Macchiato in comparison: Similarities and differences to other coffee specialties

Just like comparing cappuccino and espresso macchiato, there are subtle but crucial differences in preparation and composition.

Latte Macchiato vs. Cappuccino: The Differences

The main differences between cappuccino and latte macchiato lie in the ratio of coffee to milk, the consistency of the milk foam, and the order of mixing.

The latte macchiato consists of significantly more milk and is layered by slowly pouring the espresso into the denser milk foam. While with cappuccino the espresso comes first, followed by the milk, with latte macchiato it starts with milk, followed by espresso. This order is crucial for the formation of the characteristic layers.

Difference Between Espresso Macchiato and Latte Macchiato: Milk Makes the Difference

What is the difference between espresso macchiato and latte macchiato? The espresso macchiato is essentially a reversed latte macchiato: Here, the espresso forms the base, topped with a small dollop of milk foam—so little milk, a lot of espresso.

In Italy, the espresso macchiato (espresso with just a spoonful of milk foam) is still acceptable after 11 a.m. Beverages with larger amounts of milk, such as latte macchiato, are more like a breakfast drink there and are traditionally consumed in the morning. Ordering a latte macchiato or similar milk coffee variations after 11 a.m. often reveals someone as a tourist.

The latte macchiato ratio, on the other hand, is reversed: a lot of milk, little espresso. The espresso here merely serves to "stain" the milk and complete the three-layered masterpiece.

Milk forms the foundation of the perfect Latte Macchiato. But how much milk do you need for a Latte Macchiato, and which kind is best? For the ideal texture and taste, we recommend using whole milk. The fat content influences the consistency and flavor of your Latte Macchiato. Of course, you can also experiment with other types of milk – low-fat milk, lactose-free milk, or even plant-based alternatives. Try them out to find your personal favorite.

The ideal milk temperature is between 60 and 70 degrees Celsius. If the milk gets hotter, it burns and loses its natural sweetness. Milk that's too cold, on the other hand, doesn't foam properly. The right milk temperature is therefore crucial for achieving the perfect foam consistency and full flavor. Our Aeroccinos and machines with milk frothers are automatically set to the ideal temperature.

Latte Macchiato Step by Step

Step 1:
Prepare & froth the milk: Use approximately 110 ml of whole milk. Warm the milk with a Nespresso Aeroccino milk frother or a Nespresso machine with an integrated milk frother and froth the milk.

Step 2:
Add the milk to the glass: Pour the frothed milk into one of your coffee glasses (minimum 260 ml). Leave space for the espresso. Transparent glasses perfectly showcase the three-layered masterpiece.

Step 3:
Prepare the espresso: Brew an espresso using your Nespresso capsule machine. For the layering effect, slowly pour the espresso over the back of a spoon held just above the milk, preferably in a thin stream. This allows the espresso to settle between the milk and the milk foam.
