Nespresso’s vision is to further reduce the company’s carbon footprint by 10%. In addition, we seek to strengthen coffee farm resilience to climate change and help reverse the degradation of natural ecosystems through an extensive agroforestry program in the AAA regions. We aim to become 100% carbon efficient in our operations by compensating our residual operational carbon footprint through the same agroforestry program. This mechanism consists in planting trees within the Nespresso value chain so that the benefits delivered by the trees on top of carbon sequestration (for instance, soil regeneration, water availability…) can create shared value for the farmers and Nespresso partners.
What have we already achieved?
Between 2009 and 2013 we reduced the carbon footprint of each cup of Nespresso by 20%. We have achieved this in two ways: introducing energy-efficient machines, and piloting the Rainforest Alliance climate module at farm level.
What will we do?
Reduce Nespresso’s overall carbon footprint by a further 10%. By compensating our residual operational carbon footprint we will ultimately become 100% carbon efficient in our operations. This extends to AAA farms and regions, where agroforestry will contribute to increase their climate resilience.
How will we do it?
Managing our own operational carbon footprint gives us greater opportunities to drive energy efficiencies and carbon savings, particularly in our manufacturing and logistics outputs. We’re also using agroforestry to compensate Nespresso’s residual operational carbon footprint.
