The AAA Farmer Future Program

Most coffee farmers are subject to high levels of uncertainty, including absence of insurance, no long-term retirement planning, and risks to both crops and prices. We are committed to innovating with relevant experts and partners to play our role in reducing this exposure.

In 2014 we announced the AAA Farmer Future Program, a pioneering new program together with Fairtrade International, the Colombian government and cooperatives in Caldas, to provide the first pension scheme for coffee smallholders. This program will help facilitate the generational transfer of farms from parents to children, ensuring opportunity for young people in coffee producing regions.

Since the pilot scheme’s launch, around 800 farmers have already signed up to the new pension plan and in the long term we are looking to extend this to 40 000 farmers.
