All about the Espresso

What comes to mind when you hear the word 'Espresso'?
The relaxing vibes of Italy and the rich, bitter coffee
in a small cup could be some.
Let's delve deeper into the world of espresso, in its meaning,
characteristics, and different types, with Nespresso Professional.
The origins of espresso and its meaning
Where did espresso originate?

Espresso, a coffee served in small cups with very little
quantity, is an Italian word that carries the same meaning
as the English word 'Express'.
It refers to 'coffee extracted very quickly', brewed at
high temperatures and pressure, resulting in
a very intense and bitter taste.
Espresso was first made in Milan, Italy, in 1901.
Perhaps that's why in Italy, espresso is synonymous with
coffee itself. In Italy, espresso is not just a beverage.
To them, it acts as a symbol embodying
'communication and relaxation'.
Gaining popularity in Korea, drinking coffee and having
conversations in an 'Espresso Bar' directly reflects
the Italian culture and lifestyle.
For Italians, maintaining a balance between work and life is
crucial, and dedicating a time solely to drink coffee, is one
of the most important ways they maintain a relaxed lifestyle.

Characteristics of Espresso
The way to drink espresso

Espresso cups are small and cute, often being used as interior
decorations. Espresso is extracted in small quantities of
typically 25~40mL, and served in small cups called 'demitasse'.
Due to its small volume, espresso cools down quickly, which is
why the cups are usually heated before the espresso is poured.
Rather than letting the coffee sit for a long time,
it's best to drink it quickly as to enjoy it hot.
Espresso, essentially a coffee concentrate, is sometimes
accompanied with water, milk, or sugar to alleviate its
intense and bitter flavor. Italians also drink espresso
with a bit of sugar, based on preference.
Start by adding one or two spoonfuls of sugar,
and adjust according to your taste.
The sweetness of sugar complements the strong bitterness
of coffee, enhancing the flavor of the beans.
Some people also enjoy adding lemon to their espresso,
so don't be afraid to experiment and find your taste.
Types of Espresso
Varying quantities, different names

There are various types within the category of espresso too.
Depending on the extraction quantity and concentration,
we categorize them into espresso, double espresso,
ristretto, and lungo.
Espresso refers to a single shot of espresso,
while a double espresso has the same concentration as
the single shot, but with twice the quantity of espresso.
More commonly referred to as a two-shot, or a double-shot.
Ristretto means 'restricted' or 'compressed' in Italian,
and refers to a smaller quantity of espresso of around 20mL,
extracted in a short amount of time.
On the other hand, lungo is extracted for a longer duration,
resulting in a larger quantity of espresso,
typically over 40ml.
Lungo has a milder concentration compared to ristretto,
but the bitter aftertaste is boldly retained.
