All about Hazelnut Coffee

Hazelnut coffee has an irresistible aroma, often described
as 'nutty' and 'sweet' for its immense flavour.
Why don't we learn more about what exactly hazelnut is,
from its origins to its delectable recipes
using Nespresso Professional capsules?

What is Hazelnut?

A type of nut that is delicious and good for health

Hazelnuts, resembling acorns, are the fruits of
the hazel tree in Europe. In Korea, they are often translated as
'Gaeam Tree' (개암나무), but there are slight differences.

Hazelnuts are high in oil content and have a distinctive
flavour and aroma, whereas the Korean Gaeam has
less oil and a stronger sweetness.
Hazelnuts are a type of nut, and when you peel off the shell,
you'll find the cream-colored kernel inside,
which is the part we eat. Their taste is somewhat similar to
chestnuts, but has a stronger nutty flavour.

In Turkyie, famous for hazelnut production,
there's a proverb that goes, 'A handful of hazelnuts ensures
a lifetime of health'. This reflects the fact that hazelnuts are
rich in vitamin E, and they contain ample amounts of calcium
and iron, making them not only flavourful
but also known as a healthy nut.

What is Hazelnut Coffee?

Though the traditional method involves grinding hazelnuts
and blending them with coffee beans for extraction,
hazelnut coffee that most of us encounter is typically
flavoured with hazelnut essence, making them
'hazelnut-flavoured' coffee.
During the final stages of the bean roasting process,
hazelnut oil is added to coat the beans, or alternatively,
hazelnut syrup is added to extracted coffee.

Origins of Hazelnut Coffee

A recipe discovered while trying to hide inferior quality beans

It is said that hazelnut coffee originated from
the attempt to conceal poorly stored and low-quality beans,
by flavouring them with other scents, such as hazelnut.

It was an attempt to mask the original aroma of the beans
with nutty and sweet hazelnut to enhance its flavour.
Today, hazelnut coffee is a distinct variety made by infusing
hazelnut flavour into regular coffee beans.
