The first coffee tree in Hawaii's history was introduced in 1825 on the island of Oahu, the most populated island in the archipelago, where Hawaii's administrative centre is located: the capital, Honolulu, and the famous Pearl Harbor.
It took a further three years for Coffea Arabica to take root in Kona, finding here its ideal "terroir". These first coffee trees were considered ornamental plants and nobody on the Big Island took the trouble to harvest their fruit.
But in 1840, the arrival of a Guatemalan strain changed everything: bearing more fruits, it encouraged a number of Hawaiians to start out in coffee cultivation. By the middle of the 19th century, whale fishermen and merchant sailors, having stopped off in Kona, started spreading the reputation of this extraordinary coffee with its "smell of freshly ground heaven" around the world.
Today, Hawaii Kona coffee is produced by more than 600 farms, most of them family run and each covering hardly two hectares on average. These special conditions mean that in the coffee belt it can truly be said that every farmer knows his coffee trees"like the back of his hand".
