We would like to start by saying thank you for every used coffee capsule you return to us – and for being here to learn more about how our recycling program works.
We know that recycling coffee capsules is a collective effort, where Nespresso and every Nespresso coffee lover has an important role to play. Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for you to get involved. Whichever way you choose to recycle with us, we hope you’ll find these simple and practical tips useful.
1. Store your capsules in sealed cannister.
While your coffee grounds remain a precious resource after use – going on to become compost for landscaping once recycled - they can start to smell if they are not sealed in an airtight container, particularly in the summer months.
Nespresso’s recycling cannister is easy to store, carry, empty and clean. It is sleek in design and comes with a handle and sealable lid so you can avoid any unwanted odours.

2. Decide how often you want to recycle and plan your storage needs around it.
It can take several months to fill a Nespresso recycling bag, depending on how many coffees you drink. That’s a good thing for convenience as it means most coffee drinkers, who consume between one to three coffees a day, don’t have to recycle their capsules very often.
If you only want to recycle a few times a year, consider how often you drink coffee and work backwards. A single Nespresso recycling cannister can hold 160 Original capsules, 60 Vertuo/Mug capsules, or 180 Professional capsules. Decide how often you want to recycle and plan your storage capacity around that.

3. Find the most accessible and convenient recycling option for you.
Choose a recycling option that best suits your lifestyle and routine so that it’s easier to stick to. There are now four ways to get involved with our recycling program, each with different benefits:
- Drop them off for free at a Nespresso Boutique. Find a boutique
- Drop them off for free at a participating collection point closest to you. Find a collection point
- Collect in bulk, either privately or publicly, on behalf of your community, workplace or residential complex and book a free recycling collection. Any Nespresso customer can sign up to be part of the bulk recycling program. You may prefer to encourage your workplace to sign up as a benefit for staff. Sign up to bulk recycling
- Post them back to Nespresso in a subsidised Australia Post Satchel.

4. Add the right recycling bag or box to your coffee order.
Adding a recycling bag or bulk collection box to your coffee order will help recycling become part of your regular coffee routine and simplify the process. Please note, there are several recycling bags and boxes available depending on how you plan to recycle:
Free recycling bag – You can collect this from your local boutique or order one online with any coffee order. This bag can only be used to recycle your coffee capsules in a Nespresso Boutique or participating collection point, excluding Australia Post.
Australia Post satchel – This pre-paid satchel allows you to post your capsules via Australia Post drop off points. It is a convenient option for customers who do not live near a boutique or local collection point, and who do not wish to participate in our free bulk collection service. While Nespresso subsidises this postage cost for customers, there is a $5 fee applied to cover the remainder.
Bulk recycling boxes – These boxes and bags come in kits of three for large volume capsule recycling and can be ordered online for free with any coffee order once you have signed up to the bulk recycling program.
5. Check your recycling bag limit and be careful not to overfill.
It’s very important that you do not overfill your recycling bags, as overfilling can split the bags and risks losing capsules along the journey. Check the capacity of your chosen bag and fill only to the recommended line to make sure your capsules arrive safely.
Capsule limits per bag:
Free recycling bags: 200 Original / 100 Vertuo / 200 Professional
Australia Post Satchels: 180 Original / 90 Vertuo capsules / 180 Professional
Bulk recycling boxes: Approximately 1200 Original / 900 Vertuo / 1500 professional capsules
