AWAKEN THE HARVEST
In Zimbabwe, coffee artists and coffee lovers came together to help their dreamland flourish once more, bringing a treasured coffee back to life. Supply is still limited, but it’s a sign of more to come.
A COFFEE DREAMLAND
Zimbabwe’s high mountains and cool temperatures make it ideal for growing coffee. Back in the 1990s, production peaked at 15,000 tons. Its quality was said to rival Kenyan coffee. It must have been the zesty acidity and rich berry flavours found in Zimbabwean Arabicas.
Sadly, economic instability coupled with climate change crippled the coffee sector. Price volatility and crop shortages conspired to bring production down. In 2017, when Nespresso stepped in, it was less than 500 tons - about two thirds lower than in the 1990s.
BRIGHT NEW DAY
Local farmers joined the Nespresso REVIVING ORIGINS program with a plan to bring it back. Together with Technoserve and Zimbabwe’s coffee estates, we run farmer training where we tackle issues like tree coverage and finding water management solutions.
>Working closely with the farming community, bringing expert trainers and establishing sustainable practices will help restore Zimbabwe’s coffee industry in the long term.
It’s not an over-night goal, but we’re in it for the long haul.
Capsule recycling
Nespresso’s dedicated capsule recycling program has four ways to get involved.
