At Nespresso , we want every capsule to be recycled, which is why we’re always exploring new ways to engage more people with our recycling program. Our first Recycling Rewards trial received positive engagement from customers, so we are launching it again with new rewards to encourage more people to participate.

Q: How does it work?

Nespresso will give you a $5 discount redeemable an on-the-spot to use towards your coffee or machine order, when you recycle a full bag of at least 100 aluminium coffee capsules at your Nespresso boutique and make the purchase during your visit. Participants will be required to register their returned bag of recycled capsules via a QR code at the drop off point and show this to a Nespresso member of staff in order to claim their discount and be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win one of 10 Vélosophy RE:CYCLE bicycles made using recycled Nespresso coffee capsules.

We want to make sure everyone can access their recycling reward on the spot, without concern of stock availability. We also want to inspire customers around second life products made using recycled materials. We are therefore trialling Recycling Rewards with a $5 discount which can be applied to coffee and machine purchases made in boutiques during the same visit when you recycle, as well as being entered into a prize draw for the chance to one of 10 Vélosophy RE:CYCLE bicycles made with recycled Nespresso coffee capsules.

Customers can claim a $5 discount on your next coffee or machine order made in the Nespresso boutique during the same visit when you recycle at least 100 coffee capsules. Each participant can claim up to 1 discount during the trial period.

All participants could also win one of 10 Vélosophy RE:CYCLE bicycles made using recycled Nespresso coffee capsules (note: bicycle may require some assembly).

Do participants have to buy a Nespresso product to claim their $5 discount?

Accepted Answer

Yes, as the reward is a $5 discount, customers must use it on Nespresso coffee or machines made in the Nespresso boutique during the same visit. The $5 discount is not transferrable for cash.

Who is eligible to take part?

Accepted Answer

The Recycling Rewards trial is open to any Australian resident over the age of 18 who returns a full bag of at least 100 aluminium capsules directly to one of our boutiques across Australia during the trial period. Returned capsules do not need to be Nespresso capsules.

Do my capsules have to be Nespresso capsules?

During the trial, you can return any aluminium coffee capsules to Nespresso boutiques for recycling.

Why are you recycling non-Nespresso capsules?

Accepted Answer

Not all coffee capsule brands offer recycling services like Nespresso does for our customers. During this trial, we want to welcome anyone over the age of 18 in Australia to experience the program and learn about our various recycling channels. We believe this campaign be a force for good whether participants choose to join us in creating a circular economy into the future or it inspires them to find alternative ways to recycle.

Do you always recycle non-Nespresso capsules?

Accepted Answer

Our recycling service is designed to cater for Nespresso customers, so our facility can process all aluminium capsules. We’ve been doing trials as part of the product stewardship to cater to different types of capsules but it is not yet ready.

Is there a limit to how many rewards I can claim during the trial?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We want to encourage regular recycling behaviour. So, eligible participants can claim up to one $5 discount during the campaign and be entered into the prize draw once during the period.

If I return multiple bags at once, can I claim multiple rewards?

Accepted Answer

Participants can only claim one reward during the campaign and be entered into the prize draw once, and eligible recycling bags must contain a minimum of 100 aluminium capsules.

If you have more than one bag of capsules to recycle during the offer period, as usual you’re encouraged make use of our recycling service whenever you need it.

Question 15

Can I claim a reward if I return my capsules via post or drop them off at a bulk collection point?

Accepted Answer

No, this trial is running across Nespresso boutiques only. However, our other recycling options remain open and our aim is always to recycle as many capsules as possible.

Why is the reward only open to people returning capsules to boutiques?

Accepted Answer

During the trial period, we are focusing on boutiques as this is the simplest way for us to test the rewards scheme.

What happens to your capsules when they’re recycled?

Accepted Answer

Aluminium coffee capsules that are recycled with Nespresso are sent to a specialist recycling plant based in NSW. There, the aluminium is separated from the residual coffee. The coffee is sent to a local facility to be used in soil for landscaping or processed into compost, while the aluminium is recycled and sent back to the aluminium industry to produce new aluminium products.

How else can Nespresso customers recycle their capsules?

Accepted Answer

There are currently four ways to recycle your used Nespresso aluminium coffee capsules in Australia:

Return your used aluminium capsules to a Nespresso boutique.
Drop them off at a participating collection point.
Post your used capsules back to Nespresso using a special Australia Post satchel.
Participate in one of our bulk recycling collection initiatives where workplaces or community locations can become a public or private recycling point.

Why does Nespresso use aluminium for its coffee capsules?

Accepted Answer

We use aluminium because it is the best material to protect the freshness, taste and quality of Nespresso coffee. Aluminium is a naturally occurring metal and is infinitely recyclable, and recycled aluminium is exceptionally versatile. Creating new material from recycled aluminium uses 95% less energy than being extracted from raw material. Thanks to the aluminium, there is no need for additional over-packaging to protect freshness and taste. Aluminium is used in a wide range of products, from food packaging and cars, to computers, window frames and bicycles.

Have you ever considered using plastic capsules as an alternative?

Accepted Answer

Plastic capsules generally need more packaging, such as an additional wrapper to preserve freshness. Ironically, this is often made of aluminium. As aluminium is infinitely recyclable, we believe it is the more sustainable material for our capsules as it reduces the need for extra packaging and is the best material to protect the freshness and quality of our coffee. Recycling plastic capsules is also complex than those made from aluminium.

Question 21

Why don’t you use biodegradable capsules?

Accepted Answer

At the moment, aluminium remains the best material for us to maintain the quality of our coffee during the production, transport and storage stages of our supply chain. It is also the only food safe material which is also infinitely recyclable when returned to our capsule recycling scheme.

Our commitment to innovation means we are always looking for more sustainable options and we will continue to test and research designs and materials.

Are your capsules made from recycled aluminium?

All our Original Line capsules are currently made from 80% recycled aluminium and most of our Vertuo capsules are made from 85% recycled aluminium.

Why aren’t your capsules made from 100% recycled aluminium?

Accepted Answer

There are two reasons:

(1) the capsule manufacturer must use some virgin aluminium to fine-tune the alloy to get the right properties; and

(2) the membrane is still made from virgin aluminium.

What about Nespresso Professional customers, how can they recycle their used Professional coffee capsules?

Accepted Answer

We offer a free of charge collection service to our larger customers for their used Nespresso capsules. Upon request, we will send a bulk recycling kit which contains three boxes that can hold in excess of 1,500 used aluminium capsules each (both Professional and in-home Nespresso capsules). As both Nespresso capsules are recyclable, we also encourage businesses to collect the used Nespresso aluminium capsules that employees can bring in from home, making it even easier to participate in recycling.

What if the participant doesn’t have a mobile phone to scan the QR code?

Accepted Answer

That’s ok! They can simply ask a Nespresso staff member to scan the code for them using an iPad in-store and complete the form that way.
