Making an espresso

Espresso is a concentrated coffee obtained using an espresso machine.

For preparation, hot water (usually between 83 and 89°C) is pressed through finely ground coffee (6.5-7.5 grams) under high pressure (usually between 9 and 16 bar). The ideal brewing time is between 20 and 30 seconds.

The volume of water used is usually around 40 ml, resulting in a small, concentrated, and intense cup with a layer of foam called crema, which contains fats and sugars pressed out of the coffee by the pressure.

The pressure exerted by the machine is essential for extracting the flavors and tastes, while the water temperature must be high enough to extract the oils and aromatic compounds from the coffee without burning them.

The finely ground coffee is placed in a special filter before being placed in the machine. The characteristics of a good espresso, such as intensity, flavor, and creamy texture, are the result of the unique brewing method.

Despite its strong taste, a 30 ml cup of espresso contains less caffeine than a cup of filter coffee.

Is it expresso or espresso?

Is there a difference? Which name is better?"

In fact, they both refer to the short, intense coffee extracted under high pressure and topped with a caramel-colored foam.

The word "espresso" comes from the Italian "caffè espresso," meaning "express coffee." For purists, "espresso" is the correct and original form of the word, and it is the form generally used by baristas worldwide.

In Europe, particularly in France and Portugal, people prefer to drink an 'espresso'. This term is a kind of Frenchification of the Anglicism 'express', referring to the speed of preparation and extraction.

Furthermore, the word 'espresso' comes from the Italian 'esprimere', which means 'to express'. Another X!

So, there is no wrong option; it's all a matter of geography and choice. Nespresso has chosen the original term 'espresso'.

The different types of espresso

There are different types of espresso that differ from the "classic" espresso.

The ristretto uses the same amount of coffee as the classic version but with less water, resulting in a more concentrated, fuller flavor.

On the other hand, the Lungo uses more water, resulting in a longer, sweeter, and lighter coffee.

There is also the double espresso, which uses twice as much coffee and water as the single espresso, for a stronger, more concentrated coffee.

Then there is the espresso macchiato, a classic espresso with a little frothy milk on top.

And finally, there is also an Espresso Cortado, a cortado is an espresso diluted with warm milk. The milk-to-coffee ratio in a cortado is about 50% milk and 50% espresso.

Each of these types of espresso offers a subtle difference in taste and texture, providing coffee lovers with various options.

How much caffeine is in an espresso?

The amount of caffeine depends on several factors, including the amount of coffee used, the size of the cup, and the extraction time.

Generally, an espresso contains about 30 to 50 mg of caffeine per 30 ml serving.

However, it's important to note that this amount can vary depending on the brewing method and the type of coffee you use. For instance, the fineness of the grind or a smaller filter in your coffee maker can increase the caffeine content.

The same goes for an espresso machine with a longer extraction. Ultimately, the caffeine content can vary, but generally, a small cup of espresso contains about half the amount of caffeine compared to, for example, a filter coffee.

What is the quality of an espresso capsule?

The quality of espresso from capsules depends on various factors: the coffee used, the grind, and the compatibility of the capsules with the machine.

Generally, capsules contain pre-packaged coffee grounds, which can reduce the freshness and finesse of the coffee.

Therefore, Nespresso offers high-quality coffee capsules with freshly ground and roasted coffee, for a superior espresso experience.

Lastly, not all espresso machines are compatible with all capsules, which can affect the properties of the drink.

To enjoy the best flavors of your coffee, always use your Nespresso espresso capsules with the appropriate coffee machine.
