Farming

SUSTAINABLE COFFEE QUALITY

We are big believers that your coffee should not just taste good, it should do good too. Not just for the coffee you enjoy today, but also the coffee you enjoy tomorrow. What do you do when no existing sustainability scheme is good enough? You launch your own.

Since 2003, Nespresso has proudly maintained the AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program in collaboration with the NGO, Rainforest Alliance. This ensures that we are doing our part to contribute to a sustainable coffee economy now and in the future.

Harvesting

HAND-PICKED COFFEE CHERRIES FOR CONSISTENCY

The fruit of the coffee tree is known as a cherry. While they may come from the same tree, cherries ripen at differing rates and therefore should be picked at different times.

That’s why we prefer to pick coffee cherries by hand. This way, coffee cherries are picked at their best. It’s about ensuring you enjoy the same high-quality coffee cup after cup.

Not all beans are created equal...

Like with a great meal, the best tasting products always start with the best ingredients. The more consistent the beans, the more even the roast, and ultimately, the better the quality of the cup.

  • We choose beans that are rigorously selected, graded and tested so that you can be guaranteed the highest quality coffee.

  • This is also thanks to our partners. We’re lucky to be working closely with over 100,000 coffee farmers across the globe who are as committed to quality as we are.

Blending

THE ART OF THE BLEND

Some call it art and science. The way each coffee is developed doesn’t happen by chance – rather, more than 30 years of experience.

With each sip you take – at your desk or in your boardroom – each Nespresso coffee blend has been mastered to understand the origins of both fragrance and flavours and their power of transformation.

  • Our panel of master coffee blenders select specific coffee origins for their unique characteristics and skilfully combine the beans to create new and exciting flavours. To ensure quality, our panel of experts are intensively trained, tested, certified and re-certified every 3 months for their ability to identify quality.

  • Coffee beans are then roasted to the precise time and temperature best suited to their terroir to ensure that the full flavour characteristics of your coffee come to life. We source the highest quality Arabica and Robusta beans to bring distinct characteristics to a blend. Where Arabica brings sweetness and acidity to the cup, Robusta adds strength and bitterness. We combine Arabica and Robusta blends to provide you with unique coffee personalities. Both varietals are used to balance a blend.

Roasting
& Grinding

ROASTING TO REVEAL NEW COFFEE AROMAS

Roasting and grinding are vital stages towards creating a coffee – it’s here the coffee beans reveal their full flavour and aromatic potential to be found in your cup.

We use a range of roasting techniques to acquire vastly different in-cup results. Knowing our beans inside and out means the goal of optimising and maximising its flavour is achieved.

  • Origin, terroir and varietal… all these elements impact how we roast your coffee to make sure you have consistency cup after cup, year after year.

  • MADE-TO-MEASURE GRINDING FOR EXTRACTION

    That warm, inviting smell of coffee – fresh in the morning, or a 3pm pick up before meetings. The aroma is thanks to all of the steps that have gone before, but it is the grinding and extraction processes that allows that delectable smell to be released. The size of the grind is matched to the optimum rate at which the coffee flows into the cup. We value precision consumption as it ensures that no water, coffee or energy goes to waste into the making of your cup.

Encapsulation

CAPTURING FRESHNESS AND KEEPING IT SAFE

After roasting, your coffee is ground and sealed in an aluminium capsule.

We choose aluminium to guarantee the freshness of your coffee by protecting it from external factors that can impact quality, including oxygen, moisture and light.
