  • There is no water coming out of the coffee outlet. What can I do?

If you press a cup button and no water comes out of the spout, it is possible that the machine has an air bubble which most often occurs when the tank runs empty or after a period of non-use.

Inissia/ Essenza mini/ CitiZ/ Pixie/ Expert/ Lattissima / Lattissima One/ Maestria / Creatista owners can fill the water tank, eject any capsule in the chamber, close the coffee lever and press the large cup button. The auto-prime function will push the air from the circuit. When water begins to flow through the spout, the air bubble has been released.

For U and Prodigio machine user, please open and close the slider few times. When water begins to flow through the spout, the air bubble has been released.

*Please note, we will suggest you to rest your coffee machine for 30 minutes after 5 trials.

For any further information on your machine, please contact the Nespresso Club at 0809 001 886 (toll-free) or by email.

  • How often should I descale my Nespresso machine?

In order to keep your Nespresso machine in optimal condition, if you are using Lattissima series or Maestria series coffee machine, please descale your coffee machine once the descaling alert is on. For machine other than these, you are advised to descale your machine every 1 or 1 and half year. The harder the water in the area where you live is, the more often you need to descale your Nespresso machine.

Water residue and limescale can accumulate within the system. It may not only affect the temperature, flow and quality of your espressos but it may also shorten the life of your machine.

  • When will my Nespresso capsule expire?

Our capsules are hermetically sealed for optimal conservation of coffee aromas. We guarantee the freshness of consumption for up to 90 days for your order delivery. (*Free capsule testing kit up to 30 days.)

However, the best before date is not the expiry date, as coffee is not a perishable product. This date is recommended to obtain the best results in cup.

After the best before date, the loss of aroma begins very slowly through the vacuum-sealed packaging. This does not mean the perishableness of the product. As long as the coffee grounds do not have contact with air or water, it is non-perishable indefinitely. Therefore there is no health risk if the coffee is being drunk after expiration of the best before date. However, we still suggest you to enjoy Nespresso before the best before date to enjoy the most aromatic and ultimate coffee experience.

  • How many calories are in each Nespresso capsule?

Nespresso coffees are very low in calories, with less than 2 calories per cup.

  • How much caffeine is in each Nespresso capsule?

The caffeine per brewed Original Espresso capsule (40ml) varies between approximately 55 and 105 mg (with the exception of Ispirazione Kazaar, which has approximately 120 mg). The caffeine per brewed Original Lungo capsule (110ml) varies between approximately 75 and 110 mg. For Vertuo, the caffeine per brewed capsule varies between approximately 64 and 257 mg based on different cup sizes. To check the caffeine in each capsule, you can see the description on the package of each sleeve or click the Ingredient and Allergens at the bottom of capsules description.

  • What is the difference between Decaffeinato and the original coffee?

The residual caffeine content in Nespresso Original decaffeinated blends is 1.7~2 mg. The residual caffeine content in Nespresso Original decaffeinated blends is 4~11 mg. The decaffeination processes respect the environment and the coffee bean’s true nature, allowing us to maintain the strength, variety and richness of its aromas.

Decaffeination is an additional step before roasting and grinding. In general there are several different processes of decaffeination. Some of them use chemical solvents and others use natural ingredients: water or carbon dioxide, a natural constituent of air. We at Nespresso use only those with natural ingredients:
    - In the water decaffeination process, the raw coffee beans are soaked in water or they are gently steamed to make the bean texture porous. After that by circulating the water or steam through the porous beans, the water removes the caffeine and some other water-soluble solids. The water is then removed from the beans and filtered via active carbon where caffeine is separated from the other valuable coffee solids, which are then returned to the beans. The coffee is then dried after which the decaffeinated beans are ready for roasting.
    - In the carbon dioxide method, the raw coffee beans are moistened with water or steam and put into a vessel where it is pressurized with liquid carbon dioxide. Circulating through the coffee, the carbon dioxide draws the caffeine and some other water-soluble solids out of the bean. The caffeine is then removed from the beans and filtered via active carbon where caffeine is separated from the other valuable coffee solids which are then returned to the beans. The coffee is then dried after which the decaffeinated coffee is ready for roasting.

Both decaffeination methods used by Nespresso are completely safe for coffee drinkers.

  • Do Nespresso capsules contain any allergens or gluten?

Nespresso capsules do not contain common food allergens, including dairy, gluten, nuts, soy, and eggs. References to "malt", "milk", or "cocoa" notes are components of the aromatic profile and do not suggest their presence in the coffee.

  • What's inside the Nespresso capsule?

Roast and ground coffee. In order to guarantee the freshness, within the capsule, ground coffee is separated from the aluminum by a food-grade lacquer.

  • Why does Nespresso use aluminum capsules?

No other capsule material that we have examined can protect the freshness and aromas of our coffees, while interacting with our machines in such a way as to consistently produce the high-quality coffee that our consumers have come to expect.

In addition, aluminum has the unique advantage of being infinitely recyclable. The use of aluminum also allows us to eliminate the need for any additional packaging or overwrap to protect freshness, and its light weight offers transportation and environmental savings when compared to other materials.

Within the capsule, the coffee is separated from the aluminum by a food-grade lacquer.

  • How many capsules are in a sleeve?

For all Original coffees, there are 10 capsules per sleeve. For Vertuo Espressos (40ml), Double Espressos (80ml), Gran Lungo (150ml), Signature (230ml), there are 10 capsules per sleeve as well. The quantities online are shown in capsules, and must be selected in a multiple of 10. For Vertuo Alto (355ml) and Carafe (535ml), there are 7 capsules per sleeve due to its larger cup size. The quantities online are shown in capsules, and must be selected in a multiple of 7.

  • What is the difference of cup size, ristretto, espresso and Lungo?

Espresso and Lungo are the two main coffee extraction sizes used with the Original system.

An Ristretto/Espresso is a 25/40 mL shot of coffee (small cup button) and contains coffee of a finer grind.

A Lungo is a 110 mL shot of coffee (the large cup button). The Lungo capsules contain coffee of a coarser grind.

Extracting at the recommended level prevents over-extraction. Each Nespresso capsule is created to be extracted at a certain level. Past that, it will stop producing flavour and start to burn – meaning your coffee will taste bitter.

  • Does Nespresso offer Fair Trade coffee?

The Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program differs from Fair Trade in that it seeks to find a long-term balance between highest quality - which is the primary basis for the selection of our coffees - and social, environmental, and economic criteria. This program has been developed in close collaboration with the leading non-governmental organization, Rainforest Alliance.

Nespresso has been committed to ensuring that the communities of coffee farmers that produce the highest-quality coffees for us benefit from the excellence of their crop. The AAA premium that Nespresso pays participating farmers is roughly 30-40% above the standard market price for coffee and 10-15% above coffees of similar quality. The program is about more than paying a premium; it is about building a long term relationship with coffee farmers.
