Top Questions★
- The best way to quickly troubleshoot your machine alerts is via the Nespresso App. Follow the steps here. Once your machine is connected to the Wifi, your phone will automatically receive notifications about what to do when an issue occurs.
- Here are the most common alerts:
- Unlocked machine: Your machine will not run if not properly closed, make sure when locking it, to push the lever all the way to the left until it clicks.
- Empty water tank: make sure the water tank has enough water before starting brewing.
- Eject previous capsule: For quality purposes, Vertuo Next will always require you to eject the previous capsule before brewing the next cup. If you simply wish to top up your coffee, you can do so by pushing the coffee button a second time within 30 seconds after brew.
- Blocked brew unit: the upper part of the brew unit that punctures the capsules may be blocked. Open the head of the machine and carefully try to spin the top round area to make sure it moves in both directions. Once moving, try brewing again.
- Capsule not recognized: perform a cleaning procedure twice to ensure that there is no residue in the capsule recognition system. Follow the steps here or see this video .
- Electronic error: Restart the machine by disconnecting the power cord from the outlet and plug back after 10 seconds. If problem persists, perform factory reset by following the steps here.
- Descale needed: For optimal performance, your machine must be descaled every 3 months. Please follow the steps here or see this video.

- Firmware update: If you recently connected your machine to the Nespresso App, it might be going through a software update. Restart the machine by disconnecting the power cord from the outlet. After 10 seconds, plug the machine back and wait 3 mins until the light becomes steady.

- During the brewing process, some water backflow is redirected to the capsule container.
- Nespresso released a remote software update to reduce this backflow. If you wish to update your machine, please connect it to the Nespresso App. Follow the steps here. Once connected, your machine will update the settings within 48 hours.
- Check if the water tank does not have any damage and is securely positioned in the machine before brewing. If this does not resolve the issue, please contact our toll-free number, 800-562-1465, so we can better assist.

TIP: The machine automatically powers off after 2 minutes of inactivity. Make sure the machine stays on throughout the pairing process.
- Make sure you download the Nespresso App and the machine is plugged in and turned on.
- Place your mobile device on top of the machine. Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are all turned on.
- Launch the Nespresso App.
- From the App homepage, click on the Machine icon in the top right corner, and Follow the steps in the screen.
- When connecting to the Wi-Fi, make sure the signal is strong.
- The Nespresso App will search for Wi-Fi networks. If none are detected, select “Refresh” at the bottom of the screen.
- Once your Wi-Fi network is located, select it and enter your password and tap connect.
- If no Wi-Fi networks are located, close the Nespresso App and repeat from step 3 above.
- Once the connection is successful, select OK.
- Under Connectivity the machine should say “Connected.”
Blinking Light Issues
- Fill the water tank and push button to start.
- Check that handle is properly locked.
- If coffee is flowing normally, this indicates the machine is working properly.
- If only water is flowing, the machine is executing a user request for either cleaning, descaling or emptying the system.
- If there is no intention to clean, descale, or empty the system, then push the button to stop the machine. If the machine is still blinking, exit descaling mode by holding the button for at least 7 seconds. If problem persists, call Nespresso at 877-964-6299.
- It will take some time before the coffee flow comes out (due to barcode reading and pre- wetting the coffee).
- Check that a fresh capsule is inserted in correct position, that the handle is properly locked and push the button to start.
- Fill the water tank and push button to start.
- Turn the machine to “OFF mode” by pushing the button for 3 seconds and then push it again to turn the machine “ON”. Now wait approximately 20 minutes to allow the machine to cool down after extensive use.
- If the machine doesn’t turn “OFF” then exit descaling mode by pushing the button for at least 7 seconds.
- During regular Coffee/Espresso preparation: 1) Unlock the handle and open the machine head to check that a fresh undamaged capsule is inserted in the correct position. 2) Check that the handle is in “LOCKED” position. 3) Check that the water tank is filled.
- During Descaling, Emptying and Cleaning: 1) Check that capsule is ejected. 2) Check that the handle is in “LOCKED” position.
- During Programming Volume: 1) Check if a capsule has been well inserted. 2) Please refer to the corresponding chapter.
- If problem persists:
1. Unlock the handle and open machine head.
2. Replace capsule (if needed).
3. Disconnect powercord from the outlet and plug the machine back into outlet after 10 seconds.
4. Close the head and press the button to turn “ON”, lock the lever and press again to start brewing. If problem persists, call Nespresso.
- Descaling needed: machine can be operated when alert appears only a few times after this alert before descaling becomes necessary.
- The machine has turned “OFF” automatically which occurs after 2 minutes of nonuse; push the button or “UNLOCK” the machine.
- Check the mains, plug, voltage, and fuse. If overheating is suspected, turn off, unplug, open head and let machine rest 30 mins.
- Check that handle is properly locked.
- If you want to brew a Coffee or Espresso, check that a fresh capsule is inserted in correct position, that the handle is properly locked and push the button to start.
1 blink and pause = water tank empty
2 blinks and steady = user error
2 blinks and pause = machine error, could be a priming issue
3 blinks plus steady = descaling alert
Orange pulsing down = overheated - If you are cleaning, descaling or emptying the system, check that no capsule is inserted then close, lock the machine and push the button to start one of these operations.
Pairing& Wifi Connection Issues
- Login to your Nespresso.com account, then click here and delete the Vertuo Next from your registered machines.
- Factory reset the machine (refer to Reset to Factory Settings instructions on the Instructions Guides & Videos section).
- Make sure the machine is plugged in and turned on. The machine will power off after 2 minutes of inactivity so make sure the machine stays on.
- Go to your phone Bluetooth settings and unpair the machine if present. (Click here for iOS instructions or here for Android instructions.)
- Make sure your phone software is up-to-date and your Nespresso App is the most recent version.
- Make sure Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Location Services are all turned on.
- Place your smart device directly on top of the machine with no obstructions.
- Launch the Nespresso App, and attempt pairing again.
- Remember that the machine needs to be on throughout the pairing process and connecting to Wi-Fi. If it powers off, turn it back on.
- Make sure the machine is plugged into a stable power supply and turned on. If it was off, turn on, then close and re-open the Nespresso App.
- Make sure the Wi-Fi signal is strong.
- Launch the Nespresso App, tap the machine icon, and select the box that says “Connectivity”.
- The Nespresso App will search for Wi-Fi networks. If none are detected, select “Refresh” at the bottom of the screen.
- If the machine powers off, be sure to turn it back on (it powers off after 2 minutes of inactivity).
- It might appear that the Wi-Fi connectivity is lost, don’t worry, next time you turn on the machine it will connect automatically.
- If no Wi-Fi networks are located, close the Nespresso App, make sure the machine is on and repeat from step 3 above.
- Once your Wi-Fi network is located, select it and enter your password and tap connect.
- Once the connection is successful, select OK.
- Under Connectivity the machine should say “Connected.”
TIP: For a better connection with a dual band router, use the 2.4 GHz network, commonly identified with a 24G, 2.4 or 24 added to the end of the network name. For example, MyHomeNetwork2.4.
Coffee& Other Issues
- Check that the water tank is filled.
- Check that a fresh capsule is inserted in correct position, that the handle is properly locked and push the button to start.
- Open the machine head and let the capsule be ejected. Then perform a cleaning as per cleaning section.
- Preheat cup with hot drinking water from the tap.
- Descale if necessary.
- Higher intensity coffees have the highest temperatures. Making sure the cup is close to the coffee outlet during the brew helps preserve heat. If adding milk, heat before adding. Start with hotter water in the tank. Folding the coffee helps with temperature. Leaving the head open let's heat escape, leave head closed.
- Check that the water tank is well positioned.
- Check tank for damage.
- Check tank valve connection.
- Check to make sure cup support or drip tray did not overflow.
- Check drip tray and cup support for damage.
- To save energy the machine will turn off after 2 minutes of non-use.
