WE ARE COMMITTED TO CREATING A POSITIVE IMPACT

Care is what goes into every cup of Nespresso

We come together as coffee artists and coffee lovers to launch a movement devoted to coffee and to show that when care comes first, everything is possible

OUR COMMITMENTS

And working together, our biggest achievements are still ahead of us

Doing is everything.

We will keep doing everything we can to produce some of the finest coffee that preserves the best of our world.

Here are our three commitments to make coffee a force for good:

  • Reducing, reusing and recycling.
  • Supporting farmers’ livelihoods.
  • Making your cup fully carbon neutral by 2022.

Everything for positive impact.

We are convinced that coffee can be a force for good because it can shape communities and preserve landscapes for the better.

In 2020, we reached the goals of our sustainability ambitions:

  • Sourcing all our coffee sustainably.
  • Making our own operations carbon neutral.
  • Offering to more than 90% of our customers, easy access to a collection point to recycle used capsules.

Everything for wasting nothing.

We commit to accelerate our efforts in reducing, reusing and recycling.
  • We have already started using recycled aluminium in our Original and Vertuo capsules.
  • We have already set up capsule collection systems for the infinitely recyclable aluminium of our capsules.
  • The infinitely recyclable aluminium from our capsules can have a second life after use, and never wasted.

Everything for going neutral.

The new reality we are all facing has also moved us to accelerate our plans in order to achieve in 2 years what we had initially planned to accomplish over the course of 10 years.
  • We commit that by the end of 2022 your cup of Nespresso will be fully carbon neutral.
  • We are continuing to reduce the footprint of each cup.
  • We are expanding tree planting in and around coffee farms to compensate the remaining CO2 emissions with our NGO partners, the Rainforest Alliance, and PUR Project.

Everything for their tomorrow.

Creating a better tomorrow for farmers has always been our priority. That is why our commitment is to ensure farmers achieve a stable and viable living from coffee.
  • We will continue to build on 20 years of partnership with farmers, paying premium coffee prices and encouraging sustainable practices.
  • We are reducing risk from market and currency unpredictability and ensuring farmers can make a living off their work.
  • We will work with our partners at Fairtrade to increase the share of our certified coffees.

UNCOVERING THE STORY OF A CUP'S CARBON FOOTPRINT

Behind the scenes.

When it comes to your coffee’s carbon footprint, it’s what you don’t see that makes all the difference.

We are looking across the entire lifecycle of a single cup of coffee in order to reduce its carbon footprint and help us reach our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2022.

So, we invite you to explore with us the environmental impact of your cup of coffee – from beginning to end.

Three sides to every story.

The main chapters of your coffee’s carbon footprint1:
Chapter 1:
How green coffee is cultivated and transported.
Chapter 2:
How a cup of coffee is prepared.
Chapter 3:
How the coffee is packaged.

The Main actors.

The way green coffee is cultivated and transported accounts for 45% of each cup’s carbon footprint1.That’s why using a precise amount of coffee in our capsules and promoting sustainable farming practices are key to improving our carbon footprint and helping us reach our goal of becoming carbon neutral. 1Source: Quantis 2020 Swiss B2B LCA Find out more about the AAA Program

The plot thickens.

More than a third of your coffee’s carbon footprint (37%) comes from how it’s prepared from brewing to cup-washing1.The Nespresso Professional precision brewing system uses only what’s needed to prepare a cup of coffee – optimizing coffee, energy and water usage – making it a sustainable way to enjoy coffee.1Source: Quantis 2020 Swiss B2B LCA

A new chapter begins.

At 8%1, packaging is only the 4th largest contributor to your coffee’s carbon footprint.Plus, when you recycle Nespresso Professional capsules, you further reduce the carbon footprint of your cup of coffee.1Source: Quantis 2020 Swiss B2B LCA Find out how you can recycle

Closing credit.

In 2020, we brought in the expertise of Quantis, a globally recognized sustainability consulting group, to conduct a Product Life Cycle Assessment of a cup of Nespresso Professional coffee.

The study has been reviewed by independent experts and followed ISO 14040 / 14044 standards.

It is based on:
  • 40ml of Espresso cup of Nespresso
  • Nespresso Professional system
  • In Switzerland

All giving us a better perspective of our environmental impact.
