All Nespresso capsules, both from domestic and professional lines, are made of recyclable material.
When you choose to recycle your Nespresso capsules,
your coffee gains a second life:
Aluminum is 100% recyclable and is transformed into new objects,
such as bicycles, pens, watches, and new capsules.
Coffee grounds, in turn, become organic fertilizer for food
production through our Nespresso Hortas program.

Nespresso capsules are made of aluminum – the best material to protect the freshness and quality of our coffees for a long time. Plus the added benefit of being infinitely recyclable. We are committed to making recycling Nespresso capsules as simple and convenient as possible for our customers.
Nespresso has its own dedicated recycling scheme, offering a variety of options to make recycling used capsules a simple and convenient process for customers.
Our recycled capsules return to the aluminum value chain, where they are transformed into countless objects, such as automotive parts, bicycles, computers or soda cans. We also reuse coffee grounds to produce nutrient-rich organic compounds.
We use aluminum because it is the best material to protect the freshness, flavor and quality of Nespresso coffees. Aluminum is a metal present in nature and is infinitely recyclable. Thanks to aluminum, it is not necessary to use additional packaging to protect freshness and flavor. Recycled aluminum is extremely versatile. It is estimated that 75% of all aluminum produced is still being used today.
By means of reverse logistics, the capsules are sent to the Nespresso Recycling Center, in the city of Osasco – SP. There, the coffee grounds are mechanically separated from the aluminum, a process without the use of water. The aluminum goes for recycling and the coffee grounds are destined for farmers who use it to grow organic food.
Usually plastic capsules need additional packaging to preserve freshness. Typically, this packaging is made of aluminium. We believe aluminum is the most sustainable material for our capsules as it reduces the need for additional packaging and thus protects the freshness and quality of our coffees, as well as being infinitely recyclable.
